Wanderers well on top
Wexford 26 Enniscorthy 0: Enniscorthy Under-13s played Wexford in the final group match of the Leinster league, with the teams sitting second and first in the group. The game was played in perfect weather conditions on the Ross Road front pitch and both teams started well with some good, robust exchanges in the opening ten minutes.
Enniscorthy were edging it but, after an injury to out-half Tom White in the 12th minute, after he ran from his own half and was tackled just short of the Wexford line, Enniscorthy had to reshuffle the back line. With players missing already, most were out of their regular positions.
Wexford started to play better now and stole a few balls from the rucks and started to set up their backs. They were rewarded in the 17th minute when their winger, David Mcdonald, got on the end of a good passing movement and his lightning speed enabled him to cruise up the line and evade tackles to score a try which was converted.
Enniscorthy responded well and made some telling drives towards the Wexford line but were denied by some great tackling by the Wexford backs and some loose passing. Wexford got the perfect half-time tonic when, just before the break, their centre got on the end of a passing movement and he charged through the middle and scored under the posts. It was converted to leave the half-time score 14-0.
Enniscorthy started the second-half much better but, try as they could, they could not unlock the Wexford defence and were denied on several occasions just short of the line.
On the 14th minute of the secondhalf, Wexford's David Mcdonald scored again and it was converted. He added his third and his team's fourth try on the 18th minute which wasn't converted and this effectively ended the match as a contest.
Enniscorthy did finish the match camped inside the Wexford '22 but they could not penetrate their line and the score at the final whistle was 26-0 in favour of the visitors. Now Enniscorthy will wait and see how the other results go in the group to see if they can qualify for the quarter-finals and maybe get another match against Wexford at some stage.
Enniscorthy did beat Wexford in the South East league in October but that was much closer on the scoreboard! It was hard on the Enniscorthy boys who had started and ended the match so well, but the Wexford side had played so well to contain Enniscorthy and they scored those four tries.
