Tommy first home

Wednesday December 16 2009

WATERFORD A.C. staged its half marathon on Saturday last, which began at the R.S.C. in the city, proceeded to Tramore and finished back on the track at the R.S.C., and there were some good results from Wexford athletes.

Tommy McElwaine (S.B.R.) led the Model county athletes home in an excellent tenth place (behind race winner Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers) in a time of 74.51.

Conall Cooper (Slaney Olympic) followed in 20th place in 77.46, while Willie Rossiter (S.B.R.) clocked 79.21 and Ger Doyle (Slaney Olympic) ran 82.45.

Seán Murphy ( United Striders) clocked 84.55 and John Roban (Slaney Olympic) ran 87.37, while Patrick Kennedy (Slaney Olympic) finished in 88.11.

Well done to all and any other Wexford competitors on the day.

Paul Gibbons ran in the Santa Dash 10k race in aid of Barrettstown children's project on Sunday last, with the race taking place around the County Kildare estate purchased by Paul Newman many years ago. Contestants had to run in full Santa costumes, which didn't stop the S.B.R. runner posting an easy win in a time of 36.25.

Anyone looking to compete over Christmas should note that there will be two GOAL mile events taking place on St. Stephen's Day - at the St. Joseph's club track in Rosbercon, New Ross, at 11.30 a.m., and at the track in Rosslare at 11 a.m. On Sunday, December 27, Kilmore A.C. will be holding its annual onemile road race at 11.30 a.m.

Congratulations to Tommy McElwaine (S.B.R.) on his selection as Wexford Creamery athlete of the month for October, after his great exploits in cross-counry and the Dublin City Marathon.

An application to restart Macamore A.C. was approved by county delegates at the recent general meeting, with the Chairman welcoming the new members and wishing them all the best. The club will be based in Ballygarrett.
