Hazel and our man Billy proof positive that sex does sell!

Tuesday January 10 2012

I SUPPOSE a 'welcome' is in order. An explanation might be useful too, but to be fair the column's name is both precise and revealing in equal measure - we are going to watch twitter and bring you the interesting, the funny and the deadly serious from our local sports, and local sportspersons.

Some of our tweeters (which is a person who tweets) might be thinking, oh I'll have to be careful now, extra scrutiny and all that. Well, the fact is, we have been following you for months now so it's more than a little late for evasive action. A stock pile of 'interesting' comments ready to be drip-fed is how some might describe the situation.

For now to more immediate matters and recent happenings on the tweetosphere. As you have all been told before, 'sex sells'. For example, how else would you describe the peak in sales this paper has seen in the Enniscorthy region since housewives' favourite Billy Dodd got a weekly picture by-line? If 'Trending' was an Fa-led disciplinary panel, that would be irrefutable evidence.

So if any sport needed a bit of 'sexing up', it's darts. After correctly predicting a 7-3 Adrian Lewis victory in last week's World final, Wexford footballer Joey Wadding (@ joeywadding) was quick to spot local model Hazel O'sullivan (@ hazelosullivan1) - pictured above - on duty as the 'walk-on' girl. The St. Fintan's clubman tweeting - 'And the ladies are looking lovely again tonight great work @hazelosullivan1 come a long way from Mayglass'.

Also in the south-east corner of the county, albeit switching to the slightly less glamorous side of sport, you might think that point-to-point jockey Jamie Codd (@ jjcodd) would be less popular on twitter than the Wexford footballers. You would be wrong, with only Ciarán Lyng and Ben Brosnan outshining him in the popularity stakes. This week he revealed on the social media site that his eagerly-awaited return from a femur injury would likely take place towards the end of February.

Jamie knows only too well that it's not easy to mix horse racing with G.A.A., but if you're looking for more conformation you could do worse than ask Oulart-the Ballagh hurler Pad Mythen (@ padmythen) of the Mythen dynasty.

Expert free-taker he may be, expert tipster he is not after he tipped up 'Sam Bass' to win the second at Leopardstown on St. Stephen's Day. 'Sam Bass' did not win the second race at Leopardstown, in fact he did not get past the second hurdle as injury put paid to his chances. Unfortunately, family often come along a little late and Johnny Mythen (@ johnnymythen) was tardy with his advice - 'don't ever listen to @padmythen tips'. If only Johnny, if only.

WEXFORD TWEET OF THE WEEK

You don't get much more Wexford than Aussie-born, Dublin-based, Irish cricketer, Trent Johnston (@ green23) whose wife Vanessa (@ Veebeejay) is from Ballygarrett. The big man, notorious for his 'chicken-dance' after taking big-name wickets, is a regular visitor to the southeast and tweeted last week -

'First session done for 2012, heading down to Wexford for a couple of days. Cant wait to see @Veebeejay in the Cahore Swim for Charity…'

Fair play to them both, great to see 'WAGS' giving back, no matter the sport.
