CLUBCALL: GRAIG ROWING

Wednesday March 10 2010

Graiguenamanagh Rowing Club were in Carlow last weekend for the Carlow Rowing Club Head of River. The rowing conditions were excellent and some very good performances were recorded, including Jim Ryan winning the men's novice single scull in fine style.

The women's Junior 16 quad of Nora Murphy, Jessica Coady, Carrie Nolan and Danielle Ryan, coxed by Jenna Joyce, also won their category, leaving a couple of handy Carlow crews in their wake.

The race was over a distance of 2,300 metres on a time trial basis. The women's crew won by two seconds in a very tight result.

These are very good results for the club and bode well for the season ahead. It is particularly satisfying after such disruption over the winter with flood water and freezing conditions. The squad are now training hard and have a chance to do well in the season ahead.

The next race is the Skibbereen Regatta which will be at Inniscarra Lakes in Cork on Saturday, April 11. Between now and then the main thing for all crews will be to increase mileage with a view to improving stamina.

Graiguenamanagh Rowing Club is looking very healthy, with the best influx of new members in several years having signed up in recent weeks. Most of these new recruits are in the women's section, so efforts are now being put in place to bolster the men's squad.

The increased numbers also puts pressure on coaching, so anyone in the Kilkenny/Carlow area who is an experienced oarsman or woman would be very welcome at the club to get involved and push things forward.
