NEWBAWN DARTS: David Bradley yet again took top honours last week in the N.D.C. as it was a repeat of the previous final where he defeated brother and rival, Garry Bradley. David beat Paudie Sinnott, Jack Delaney and Charlie Delaney en route to the final, throwing some great darts along the way.
But nerves and inconsistency must have hit the brothers in the final as it lacked a bit in scoring power. Nonetheless, it was an intense affair, one which David won 3-2, putting him five points clear of Garry.
It was a disastrous week for P.J. Stafford as he only got one point, putting him eight points off first place. It took an impressive display from Charlie Delaney to knock P.J. out, but this surely means it is now a two-horse race for top spot.
At the other end, it's just simply too close to call as David Murphy is really making life hard for himself, barely holding on to 16th spot. Niall Gaul isn't very safe either in 15th spot as Liz Byrne, Dick Stafford and Edward McDonald are all ready to slip in to those last few spots.
Week 13 rankings: 1, David Bradley, 39 points, 13 events; 2, Garry Bradley, 34 points, 13 events, and P.J. Stafford, 31 points, 13 events; 4, P.J. NEW ROSS TOWN F.C.
New Ross Town soccer academy continues to grow with five new faces on Saturday last. The Under-6 age group got particularly stronger, with Luke Doyle having a good game. He is a regular strong player each week. There was also a great defensive display with some tough tackling by Cathal Phelan who is going to be one to listen out for in the future.
The Under-8 group played out a very tough game at the end of a good training session, with Cillian Thomas, whose name regularly appears on the scoresheet, getting some vital goals for his side. We also had some great defending by Connor Roche who impresses every week and always seems to be improving.
In the older group, Jamie 'Rooney' Butler is always in the right place to bang in the goals and plays hard every week. Kate Murphy just keeps getting better each week and is definitely going to be another one for our ladies' team in the future. All the players wish Ellen a speedy recovery and hope she is back playing soon.
There is still loads of room available for extra children at the great facility provided in Good Counsel College every Saturday, for children aged seven and under from 11 to 12, and children eight and over from 12-1. Anyone interested, just turn up or contact Liam Rossiter on 087-9340968. The cost is only ¤3 for the hour and fun is guaranteed for all.
New Ross Town ladies had no game last weekend and are waiting for the draw for the divisional cups to be made. Hopefully they can get a good run in those.
The men's team won 4-0 in the third round of the cup at home to Enniscorthy Town B. The Ross lads started very strong in the first-half but lacked that finish in front of goal. They possibly should have been 4-0 up at half-time but instead only had a goal to show for their troubles, with Mick Walsh finishing from a strong run by Ciarán Cullimore.
Three substitutes came on in the second-half and two of them got on the scoresheet. Junior Somers first made it 2-0 and then Jason Murphy scored a header with his first touch on the field. Junior Somers then ended the game with a great finish for his second.
There was a minute's silence before the game, with the lads also wearing black armbands in memory of explayer, Pat Connolly, who sadly passed away. The club would like to extend their sympathy to the Connolly family.
UNITED STRIDERS A.C.
It's been a busy couple of weeks for the Senior runners in the United Striders. First up was the My sport 10k in Enniscorthy. With a field of well over 300 going to the line, it proved to be a very successful day for host club Slaney Olympic.
First home for Striders was Seán Murphy in a time of 37 minutes, 17 seconds to place him in 28th. Next was Emmett Malone in 41 minutes, 41 seconds in 70th overall. Also running were John Kent in 44 minutes, 35 seconds, and Liam Murphy in 47 minutes, 36 seconds. Local man Ted Flannelly (Slaney Olympic) continued his good form to finish eleventh in a time of 34 minutes, 15 seconds.
Next up was the Bausch and Lomb Kilmac five-miler with a field of over 200 competing. First home was Seán Murphy in 29 minutes, 48 seconds to place him 27th. Next was Emmett Malone in 32 minutes, 48 seconds to finish 66th.
Training for the youths (eight to 18 years) continues on Saturdays at 11 a.m. in the Youth Centre. All are welcome.
BARROW WHEELERS
On Sunday last the racing section made the journey to Gorey for the second of the training races promoted by the Slipstream club. The race was run over three laps of a 20-kilometre circuit from Greene's Berry Farm to the Arklow South roundabout on the old N11.
The decisive break of the race came early, with Michael Doyle of Barrow Wheelers breaking away with one of the Wexford Wheelers. They were then joined by five other cyclists including Barrow Wheelers' Greg Dempsey.
The break worked well over the last two laps and went on to have over four minutes on the bunch by the finish. The race was won by Greg Dempsey who worked well all race and went on to take the sprint for first from Slipstream's Denis McCarthy.
Next weekend is back to training as normal from the Irishtown on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
