New boss pleased with positive start

Wednesday March 03 2010

THE NEW man in the camogie hot-seat, J.J. Doyle, was pleased to see his side perform so well in their opening match and was keen to stress that he had confidence in the players regardless of positions.

'We are very happy with the start today, it's not that experimental, the girls have been showing well in training and they are putting the effort in, and we are looking to build a squad very much for the coming years.

'The girls that came in today maybe didn't have that much experience at Senior, but they stood up to it and played very, very well and, as the scoreline says, we are very happy with how it went. They are still rusty and haven't had very much match practice but to score 2-17, we won't complain about that.'

One of those playing in an unusual role was Ciara Storey, and the manager was happy with her contribution.

'We thought she was on a strong girl, but look at the amount of times the full-back cleared the ball today, she never cleared it once.

'I played with Garry Laffan in '93 with a Minor team and he played full-back. Three years later he started and won an All-Ireland at full-forward for Wexford.

'Good players, and Ciara Storey is a good player, good players can play anywhere.'

Doyle also stated that others will come into contention for places.

'Katrina (Parrock) and Ursula (Jacob), we just gave them this weekend off because they were involved last weekend in the Ashbourne Cup with W.I.T.

'Some of the Intermediates will be involved over the league stages as well, so we will give them all a go and see how things work out for us.'

He also stressed that he was happy with the decision on captain.

'Una will be a brilliant captain for us this year so we have no problem with the choice.'

Wexford's opponents next Saturday, Galway, beat Clare by 3-16 to 1-5 in their Division 1 opener in Athenry on Sunday last.
