Gusserane win local derby

Tuesday August 31 2010

GUSSERANE ENCOUNTERED little difficulty when they crossed swords with New Ross District neighbours Horeswood in the Junior hurling championship relegation semi-final in O'Kennedy Park, New Ross, on Sunday last.

Their 14-point win ensures they are safe in the same grade for another year, while the losers will play Monageer-Boolavogue to decide who goes down.

There was never much doubt about the final outcome as Gary O'Grady had the ball in the Horeswood net half a minute after the throw-in and the winners were 1-7 clear by the time Michael O'Hanlon opened the Horeswood account midway through the first-half. By the break it was 2-9 to 1-3 following an exchange of goals between Fintan Ryan and Conor Breen.

Further goals for Gusserane in the second half from Gary O'Grady and P.J. Cullen helped to widen the margin to 14 at the finish.

Gary O'Grady showed great accuracy for the winners with 2-9 to his credit, while Michael O'Hanlon was the most prolific for Horeswood with 0-7.
