SHELMALIERS

Shelmaliers launched their all-new development lotto and 1910 hurling centenary celebrations in Hotel Curracloe on Wednesday night last, with special guests Tony Dempsey and Co. Secretary Margaret Doyle.

Chairman, Seamus O'Leary, welcomed everyone to the launch. He praised the skills of local artist Andrew Kenny, Castlebridge, for designing the unique 1910 logo that will be used for the year-long celebrations. He said there were two booklets full of information on both launches and thanked Paul Tobin for the 1910 information booklet.

Margaret Doyle congratulated Shelmaliers on their forthcoming ventures and said it was a special year for the Shelmaliers and indeed for Wexford.

Tony Dempsey thanked Shels for the invitation and said it was a significant honour to be associated with the Shelmaliers and especially for this year celebrating the 1910 victory. He said that it was an occasion of remembering the past and planning for the future.

He said that the new Shelmalier development lotto would ensure that the magnificent development ongoing at Hollymount would continue into the future and would be of enormous benefit to the entire parish. He encouraged everybody in the parish to support the new lotto when it begins on February 15.

New development lotto Chairman, Larry Banville, thanked everyone for coming and said that the new development lotto will be supported by the parish for the parish and that all monies raised and won would be going back into the parish. He appealed to all the people living in the parish to support the continued development at Hollymount.

Thanks to Hotel Curracloe and staff and to Lar Kenny for the music. A great night was had by all. There is a full report on www.shelmaliers.ie.

A sub-committee has been formed to organise a display of memorabilia for the 1910 celebrations in March, and they are appealing for any items you may be able to loan them or indeed for any information relating to that great day. The Minor footballers had a quorum for the first time this year when they played Ballyhogue in Bree in the Martin Cullen Cup quarter-final on Sunday last. Midfielder David Bury led a great team performance with his high fielding and three super longrange points which contributed to a rare victory over Ballyhogue at this level, scoring 314, all from play, and with nine different scorers to Ballyhogue's 1-7.

It would be unfair to pick out particular players from a team performance based on strong running and good support play.

GLYNN-BARNTOWN

Ray Doyle lost his brave battle with illness on Saturday and one of our club's great characters is no longer with us. Whether it was adding weight to hurleys with a bit of lead, selecting our Junior team to championship success or stopping off in Arklow on the way home from matches, Ray was his own man but a Glynn-Barntown man to the core. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis.

At the camogie A.G.M. on Friday last, Betty Waslh and Meabh Cooney stepped down from Chairperson and Secretary after a period of unprecedented success. John Cooney will take the Chairperson's role for 2010, with Suzanne Goff taking over as Secretary.

They have a hard act to follow and we wish them and the camogie club every success in the year to come.

Saturday next is registration day. All players from nine years of age to adult are asked to come to the clubhouse between 4.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to register and pay their registration fee for the year.
