Hurling

Glynn-Barntown can breathe easy

Tuesday August 31 2010

GLYNN-BARNTOWN had an easy passage to the Pettitt's Senior hurling championship B semi-final when they easily overcame the challenge of relegation contenders RathgarogueCushinstown at Taghmon on Saturday last.

In fact, the end result was known after 15 minute, at which stage the Wexford District side had already taken a lead of 3-5 to 0-4.

There was little indication of what was to follow when Christopher and Denis Kent exchanged points with Paul Carley and Craig Doyle inside the first ten minutes.

But the floodgates opened after Paul Carley, operating at full-forward, scored the first of the winners' goals when he was set up by Craig Doyle, and Craig himself then accounted for the second and third goals, all three in the space of five minutes.

Brendan and Michael Doyle, John Leacy and Daire Barron all contributed points for the winners as they held onto an eight-point advantage (39 to 1-7) at the interval.

The Rathgarogue-Cushinstown goal came in the 30th minute of the firsthalf when a long ball in from midfielder Enda Doran landed on the edge of the small square from where it appeared substitute William Kent got the final touch.

The third quarter was close enough, but when Eugene Furlong scored the fourth Glynn-Barntown goal to put his team 4-12 to 1-9 ahead midway through the second-half, it finished off any faint hopes of a RathgarogueCushinstown recovery in this onesided contest.
