Well done to the Under-14 boys who recovered from a nine-point deficit near half-time to draw with Craanford (3-3 to 2-6) in their second Division 2 championship outing in Páirc Charman on Thursday week last. ST. JOHN’S VOLUNTEERS

Our Junior hurlers continued to show early-season promise, beating Blackwater in the JCHC. They were well worth their victory by 2-12 to 1-8.

Attention now returns to the ACFL. The first team take on Craanford tomorrow in Páirc Charman at 7.30 p.m., and the second string take on Duffry Rovers this Friday at 7.30 p.m., again at Páirc Charman.

The Under-12 girls had another very good win on Saturday in Páirc Charman, accounting for a very strong Geraldine O’Hanrahans side. They started very well, taking full advantage of the strong wind to lead by 3-3 to nil at half-time.

Now prospering from the elements, the New Ross girls mounted a serious second-half comeback. However, with our backs in outstanding form, the girls plundered 1-1 against the gale to win by 4-4 to 3-3.

Well done to everyone who played so well: Ciara Cullinane, Niamh Buckley, Emily Long, Trudy Downey, Bronwyn Murphy, Freya Innis, Laura Bruen, Caoimhe O’Sullivan, Caoimhe O’Keeffe, Erin Crosbie, Christine Butler, Ciara Rafter, Clodagh Bruen, Aislinn O’Sullivan and Sally Bruen. Shouting the girls on from the line was Aoife Corkery, and brave Eimear Buckley who was injured in our last game.

All our under-age training has moved from St. Peter’s to Páirc Charman. Under-12 boys’ football takes place from 6-7 p.m. each Tuesday evening, while Under-12 boys’ hurling takes place every Thursday from 6-7 p.m.

The Under-14 boys’ footballers train from 6 to 7 p.m. every Thursday. Our Super 7s and Under-10s train every Friday from 6 to 7 p.m.

The girls have also moved to Páirc Charman. Under-14 and Under-16 girls’ football train jointly twice a week, on Wednesday from 7-8 p.m., and every Saturday from 10.30 a.m. to 12 noon.

Our Under-16 hurlers were out one week last Monday evening in Grantstown against Cloughbawn and went down to a heavy defeat. Great performances were given by Breen Howlin, Tony Hennessy, Chris Anglin and Colm Browne who was man of the match. Their next match is at home on Monday, June 22, at 7.30 p.m.

Our Minor footballers had a mixed week on the playing front. First of all we played a back fixture against Oylegate on Wednesday evening last and, through being very understrength, went under to a strong side. Then on Friday evening last we played at home to St. Pat’s and we put in a much better performance, especially in the second-half, and ran out deserving winners by 3-11 to 1-7.

There is a break now until after the exams, and hopefully after that we can get back to full strength and put in some more consistent performances.

The ladies’ team played the Shamrocks at home on Sunday evening in their first game of the championship. The sun was shining, the pitch was immaculate, and the girls gave their best performance so far this season.

Clonard opened the scoring with a Shauna Gleeson point. The girls worked the pitch and used every inch and every player to achieve a half-time score of 1-7 to nil.

Clonard were determined from the start of the second-half that this was thier game. However, the Shamrocks put up a strong fight in the beginning but lost heart in the final minutes. The final score was 4-15 to nil. Well done girls and to Jim and Nobby.

Ladies’ training is every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8.30 p.m. Under-12 is on Wednesday from 6-7 p.m., with Under-14 and Under-16 on Wednesday from 7-8 p.m.

There will be a barbeque for any hungry participants so please come along to the big event and support the young players of the parish. All welcome and a great day is promised for all!

There was no winner of the local weekly lotto which took place on May 19 in Whelan’s pub. The numbers were 4, 13, 21, 24 and the bonus number was 15. The seven lucky dip winners were Tom Murphy, Joe Murphy, Catherine Buttle, Sarah Murphy, Mick Murphy, Stephen Kelly and Marie Whelan.

The prize fund now stands at €15,200 and the next draw will take place in Phil Redmond’s Bar on June 2. A big thank you to all who support this draw.

SHELMALIERS

Our Junior hurling team was unlucky not to come away with at least a draw when they met Ballymurn’s first team in Piercestown last Sunday evening in the first round of the championship, losing by 2-10 to 0-13. Best were Ciarán Walsh, Vinny Parker, Fergie Parker, Ibar Murphy and Brian Tobin.

Our Under-14 hurling team met a very strong Rapparees side recently and was beaten well. Fresh from their success at the Féile qualifiers, the Enniscorthy side proved to be formidable opponents. Shels never lost heart and all tried their best until the final whistle. Amongst those to shine were goalie Stephen McGuire, James Cash and Evan Devereux.

Training times: Under-10 hurling and football, 6.30 to 7.30 p.m., Wednesday, and 4 to 5.15 p.m., Saturday. We welcome all newcomers into the club and, if you are interested in having your child become a member, please come along at any of the above times and we will be delighted to meet you.

Juvenile hurling training is every Sunday at 11.30 a.m. from now on, for those who can take a break from study.

BANNOW-BALLYMITTY

This week’s bingo snowball is €450. The second Model County Draw is on this evening. Good luck to everyone.

The second team hurlers were out on Saturday evening last and lost to Clongeen by 1-11 to 0-6. The previous weekend saw our first team beat the Harriers by 1-11 to 2-4.

This week sees our Senior footballers play St. Anne’s in a league match, and also the Junior footballers are out on Friday evening. Please check the sports pages for fixtures and times.

It has come to the attention to the committee that still some players have not paid their membership. As from Sunday next, anyone who has not paid won’t be allowed to play or train in the park. This applies from Under-8s to Seniors, both men and women. Thank you for your co-operation on this.

Get well to David Currid on his recent jaw fracture, and also to Jason Sinnott on his finger break. Hope to see both of them back on the pitch soon.

Anyone wishing to buy gear - hoodies, bags, t-shirts - please contact Pauline.

CROSSABEG-BALLYMURN

The Under-16 hurlers lost to Blackwater last week. The Under-14 hurlers beat Oulart on Friday last. Well done to the Rackard league hurlers who beat Gael Scoil in the District semi-final and then went on to defeat Blackwater in the final. This was their fifth title in a row and they also completed the hurling and football double for the second year in a row. Good luck to the boys in the county semi-final.

The Under-12 footballers visited the Volunteers on Sunday morning for a friendly match. Many thanks to the Volunteers for their hospitality. The Under-12 hurlers play Cushinstown at home on Tuesday, June 2.

The Under-8 hurlers played their first game in the St. Anne’s tournament, with a whole new generation of players playing their first match against the Harriers on Thursday last. Cheered on by a huge travelling support, they fielded two teams and won both matches, with all the boys and girls playing their part.

The Under-8s and Under-10s train in the pitch on Tuesdays from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and all are welcome. The club shop is open at the rear of the dressing-rooms, on Tuesdays from 6.15 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Best of luck to all those doing exams over the coming weeks.

GLYNN-BARNTOWN

Our Junior hurlers were left to rue some missed goal chances against Ballyhogue on Sunday last as their championship opened with a defeat. When some of our Minors become available again after exams, it should lead to an improvement in the next game and there is still plenty to play for.

Congratulations to all our under-age players who celebrated their Confirmation in Glynn last weekend. They all looked fantastic and are a real credit to their families.

Many had been in action for the club the previous week in Under-12 hurling and camogie. In the hurling, Kevin Mahoney was outstanding all round while Fionn Cooney grabbed 1-2 in a ten-minute spell to secure a victory away to Craanford.

Tara O’Brien and Chloe Cash supplied a lot of chances that Laura Dempsey and Courtney Carley took advantage of as the Under-12 camogie team made it four out of four in their league campaign.

Craig, Mark, Michael O’Regan, Micheál Roche and Toirleach Leacy in the management team experienced disappointment as Wexford Minors found Kildare in awesome form at the weekend. Our commiserations to all involved.

Best wishes to the Wexford Senior hurlers who include John Barron among the management team and Paul Carley on the panel.

The annual golf classic takes place on Friday, June 5, in Rosslare. A team of four costs only €220 for a round of golf, with prizes and a post-round meal in one of Ireland’s most famous courses. Please support the classic, as it has been organised to be within reach of a reasonable budget and it is rare that golfers get the chance to play the Rosslare championship course with a meal included for €55.

ST. MARTIN’S

Hard luck to the Junior team which was beaten by St. Fintan’s in a local derby played in Tagoat on Sunday last

Best of luck to Avril Boland on her wedding on Friday next to Colm McGee in Enniscorthy from all in St. Martin’s.

FAYTHE HARRIERS

The club would like to invite all its players, former players, members, supporters and parents to an information night in the Talbot Hotel on Tuesday, June 2, at 8 p.m. sharp.

The first part of the evening will be the official launch of Pikeman Challenge 2009. The challenge will consist of a three-day walk of approximately 80 kilometres at the end of August. The walks over Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be a coastal walk, a walk over the Blackstairs Mountains, and on the final day our intrepid walkers will go over the Three Rock walk over Forth Mountain before marching back into Wexford town from our grounds in Páirc Charman. Full information and brochures will be available within the next week.

The second part of the meeting will be an information night in relation to our current developments in Páirc Charman, including the provision of an all-weather arena and the building of a hurling wall. All members or players with an interest in future developments are invited to come along and see what we hope to have developed and completed by the end of the year.

The club website has been completely revamped and is currently being refurnished with new articles. You can visit our website at www.faytheharriers.com. Over the coming weeks, we hope to get new articles, photos and reports on the website on an ongoing basis. Anybody interested in penning an article is asked to contact either Willie Murphy or Richard Murphy.

The second Model County Development Draw takes place tonight (Wednesday). All sellers are asked to ensure that they have all monies returned to Nicky Keeling in advance of the draw.

While we are awaiting adult championship fixtures later in the summer, the All-County Hurling League resumes in the near future. Our three adult teams are all in action on the weekend after next as follows:

Games for our Juvenile and Minor teams have been suspended now until after the completion of the Leaving and Junior Certs. Our Juvenile team has played three games and won all three in Division 1 of the championship. Our Minor team is also unbeaten in Division 1 of their championship with one win and one draw from our two games to date.

Our Under-14 team scored their first victory of the year when they had a morale-boosting win over Liam Mellows in Páirc Charman last week on a scoreline of 3-11 to 3-1. This win leaves us with one win and one defeat from our two games to date.

Our Under-12 team also had a good win when beating Adamstown in Páirc Charman on Monday night last. We now have one win and one draw from our two games to date.

RAPPAREES-STARLIGHTS

A good win was recorded by our Junior hurlers in Farmleigh, beating Monageer in the first round of the championship by 2-12 to 2-8 with some fine shooting from veteran Gareth Kavanagh who notched a personal total of 2-3. It was a good team performance with lads hurling with passion and commitment.

Speaking of passion and commitment, our Under-14 hurlers gave an outstanding display on Thursday evening last, beating Shelmaliers comprehensively by 5-11 to 0-2. This is an extremely talented group of young players who deserve our attention and support - well done to all concerned. Don’t forget, these chaps are representing their county in both the hurling and football Féiles in June and July - aren’t they doing us proud?

Unfortunately our girls didn’t do quite as well, losing Under-12 football and Under-10 camogie this week.

CASTLETOWN-LIAM MELLOWS

Our Intermediate hurlers got their championship campaign off to a winning start in Oylelgate on Saturday week last, beating Geraldine O’Hanrahans by two points in dreadful weather conditions (3-7 to 2-8). It took a great display of guts and determination to come out on top against tough opposition. Thanks to all the supporters who travelled.

This was a well-deserved win despite ten players being injured and doing exams. Jesse Foley ensured the win with a long-distance score with much on his mind that day - an early-morning exam and his wife due that day. Young Tommy Dixon played a captain’s role in a full-bloodied and hearty Liam Mellows team performance.

In Under-12 camogie Roinn 1, these girls kept their unbeaten record intact on Wednesday night with another very impressive win over Kilrush-Askamore by 10-1 to nil. It was a good display of camogie by the Liam Mellows girls.

Their wins to date include over St. Ibar’s, Craanford, Gorey and Bannow-Ballymitty. This week the girls will play away to Cloughbawn on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

In Under-14 camogie news, this team has reached the county Roinn 2 championship semi-final. In the first match our girls overcame Craanford by 4-0 to nil. They next knocked out Marshalstown in Coolgreany by 5-2 to 4-1 in a very hard-fought, competitive match.

Our girls played Rapparees in Enniscorthy on Thursday last in the Under-12 league Roinn 2, and the game ended in a draw.

The Under-10 camogie team played Rapparees lately and had a decisive win by 9-0 to 1-0. The whole team played well.

Our Under-12 hurlers beat Ballyfad convincingly on Monday last. Their next match is away to Marshalstown on Tuesday week. Our Under-8s and 10s had two great practice matches against Kilanerin-Ballyfad and came out on the right side!

An understrength Under-14 side lost to Faythe Harriers recently. The Senior footballers had a great training session in Coolgreany on Friday last. Club gear is available from Sinéad Leonard.

RATHNURE

The official opening of the Martin Codd Hurling Arena is taking place on the weekend of Friday, June 5. Firstly the opening will be performed by his Grace, Bishop Denis Brennan, and the President of the G.A.A., Christy Cooney.

This will be followed on Sunday, June 7, with an afternoon of matches, firstly involving Rathnure v. Shamrocks (Kilkenny), and culminating with a game between the Senior hurlers of Wexford and Clare.

In association with this grand celebration, the club will have a museum of memorabilia open which is dedicated to our great past hurlers who have made our great club into what it is today. If anyone wishes to contribute memorabilia for the weekend, please contact Jim Blackburn or Mary Hayden for further details.

This is a weekend of celebration and everyone is invited to join with us in the celebrations. South East Radio will broadcast live from the G.A.A. Complex from 6 p.m., with the official ceremony due to commence at 7.30 p.m. approximately.

The Rathnure golf classic is on Friday, June 12. Tee-off times are available from Tom Higgins (087-2302994) or John Hennessy (087-2600600). Entry is €240 per team and for teams with Under-18s there will be a special price for entry.

Contact Tom or John on the above numbers, or alternatively Pat Doyle, Lory Higgins (087-9087833) or Michael O’Leary (087-6428942).

BUFFERS ALLEY

The golf classic, held as a fundraiser for Buffers Alley, was a huge success last week. Many thanks to all those who organised the event and to all the generous business people in the community who sponsored teams and prizes. It was all very much appreciated.

Winners: 1, Glanbia team (Gary Sheahan, Billy Quinn, John Walsh, Ronan Brennan); 2, Belcarrig Quarries (Paul Tyrrell, Tom Murphy, James Harte, Maurice Muldowney); 3, Casey Concrete (Ollie Quigley, Joe Kelly, J.J. Doyle, Peter McAteer).

The ladies’ long drive was won by Mary Ruth-Tobin, the gents’ long drive by Alan McDonald, and the nearest the pin by Austin Corrigan.

The following won prizes: Robert O’Loughlin, Jim Harte, Seamus O’Leary, John Walsh, Barry Doyle, P.J. Doyle and John O’Leary.

As in the past number of years, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Loch Loch Garman in conjunction with G.A.A. clubs are offering scholarships to Chorca Dhuibhne in Kerry.

Any member of Buffers Alley aged between 14 and 18 interested in an Irish language course in West Kerry from July 20 to August 11, please contact Theresa O’Leary (087-6237149) as soon as possible. A draw will take place if there is more interest than places available. Parents contribute one third of the cost.

As part of their fundraising initiatives, Coiste na nÓg is organising a ‘Guess the Score’ for the Leinster Senior hurling quarter-final, Wexford v. Offaly, to take place in Wexford Park on Saturday at 7 p.m. All cards are to be returned before Friday night, May 29, either to Theresa O’Leary or to the school.

This year the G.A.A. celebrates its 125th anniversary, and all clubs in Ireland were asked to organise a Lá na gClub to mark the special occasion. The Buffers Alley club is holding their Lá na gClub on Sunday next, May 31, at the G.A.A. grounds in Monamolin at 2.30 p.m.

This will be a special family fun day out with lots of sport and entertainment activities for all members of the community, with something for all adults and children. Admission will be free.

The evening will conclude with a barbeque. Come along and bring your friends. The previous day, Tom Donohoe, Barraglan, will represent the club at Wexford Park when a representative from all G.A.A. clubs in Wexford will form a guard of honour for the Senior hurlers of Wexford and Offaly as they march on to the field for the first round of the 2009 championship.

Hard luck to the Junior hurlers who were defeated by a goal in St. Patrick’s Park on Sunday evening last. Their opponents, county finalists of 2008 Craanford, were stronger, but with a little break now, this team will improve and will play Monageer-Boolavogue in the second round.

Good luck to all the Wexford Senior hurlers, and especially to Ciarán Kenny, Pat Kenny and Willie Doran who are all involved in the panel for Saturday evening next in Wexford Park. Tickets are on sale daily in Wexford Park from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 2.30 to 4.30 p.m.

KILRUSH-ASKAMORE

Best of luck to the Intermediate team who represent Wexford in the Leinster League final on Saturday in Wexford Park before the Wexford v. Offaly game. Best of luck also to Tom Kavanagh who was picked to play in the Rackard League match at half-time during the main game.

Congratulations to Coláiste Bhríde (Carnew) on winning the Junior ‘B’ Schools camogie county final, especially Mairéad Sheehan, Ciara Nolan and Brídín O’Rourke.

Upcoming matches: Under-12, June 2 in Gorey v. Naomh Éanna at 7.30 p.m.; Under-14, June 4, Páirc Charman v. St. John’s at 7.30 p.m. Training times remain the same.
