Hurling

Duffry avoid drop

Tuesday August 31 2010

DUFFRY ROVERS staved off the threat of relegation from Junior hurling ranks when they overcame District rivals Monageer-Boolavogue by four points in St. Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy, on Saturday last.

The eventual winners were completely on top with the elements in their favour in the opening half, surging into a commanding 1-9 to 0-1 lead. Jockey Barry O'Neill showed the other side of his sporting talent by picking off 1-2 early on, and he was aided and abetted by James Codd as Monageer-Boolavogue only managed one point before the break from free-taker Ed Rowsome - and that after a mere 30 seconds.

However, the men in red made a fight of it on the re-start as Rowsome continued to add to their tally, including one fine effort from a line ball.

Still, the Duffry always looked comfortable enough as substitute Micheál Doyle picked off four points from frees, with John O'Loughlin's late goal coming too late for Monageer-Boolavogue who have one last chance to stay up when they meet Horeswood.
