Hurling

Anne's have it their own way

ST. ANNE'S strolled to victory over a woeful Marshals town-Castle docktrell side in the Pettitt's Senior 'B' hurling championship at St. Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy, on Sunday last.

While St. Anne's can now fully focus on their football campaign, there seems little hope of their opponents surviving in the Senior grade any longer.

They afforded the Wexford District side far too much space as the most simplistic of movements from the six forwards continuously produced easy scoring chances which they duly took time after time.

It started right from the first whistle, with David O'Connor grabbing a pair of minors to help ease his side into a fourpoint lead after five minutes. James Byrne got the first of his five scores moments later but, as the Anne's dominated their own half of the field too, their scoring drives were few and far between.

A trio of points by Franny Simpson to round out the opening quarter eased his side six clear (0-8 to 0-2), before an injury to former county man 'Mitch' Jordan gave an early indication that it wasn't going to be Marshalstown-Castledockrell's day.

Micheál O'Keeffe and 'Doc' O'Connor added a brace apiece in the second quarter as the Anne's continued to pick off the points at will, yet Marshalstown-Castledockrell did have their best spell at the end of the half, with three late Byrne points leaving down by eight (0-13 to 0-5).

Jess Codd had been quiet enough while others prospered in the opening half, but that soon changed after the break. A quick double helped St. Anne's to increase their lead to twelve before Marshalstown-Castledockrell grabbed their final score in the 36th minute.

Most of the remainder of the scoring was left to Codd and O'Connor, but there was time for substitute Jonathan Fogarty to get in on the act late on as St. Anne's advanced away from relegation and into the 'B' semi-final with a 17point win.
