BALLYMONEY

Wednesday's nine-hole competition had a strong wind favouring the harder holes and yet scoring was slightly lower than of late. New Member Gregory Gilbert (17) took first prize with 18 points. Conor Tracey (16) was second with 18 points and Kevin Byrne (19) doggedly held on to third spot also with 18 points.

The weather held fair for Sunday's open singles stableford competition. Play commenced at 7 a.m. and continued into the afternoon, and thankfully the threathened rain only made a brief appearance around lunchtime. However, the later starters had to cope with a strong, swirling wind and, with the course playing to its full length, not suprisingly standard scratch came in at 72.

We had our best turnout of the year, with a welcome appearance of new members and also a healthy number of 28 visitors taking part.

Martin Sherlock (20) emerged as the clear winner with an outstanding 43 points. Conor Tracey (16) scored 38 points to take the second prize and club Secretary Charlie Logan (9) took third prize with a most impressive 37 points. Anthony Smith (17) won the back nine prize and Willie Moules (13) won the front nine prize. Best score by a visitor was from Steven Duff (17, Slievenamon) with 35 points.

The committee were delighted with the big turnout and also with the large number of visiting players.

Tara Meadows-sponsored matchplay third round: Kevin Furlong beat Charlie Logan.

This Wednesday sees a nine-hole competition and Saturday is a roll-up stableford. The Captain's prize will be played for on Sunday, September 26, and will be strokeplay from the back tees. All members are eligible to play with no pre-qualifying necessary.

COURTOWN

What is it , I wonder, about the men of Courtown Golf Club who it seems will take any opportunity to dress in skirts, dresses and some very fetching trouser suits along with wigs and make-up that Dolly Parton would be proud of? Well, that is exactly what happened on Saturday night last with our version of 'Strictly Come Dancing' with a twist.

A few brave members agreed to make complete fools of themselves (including the writer so I can say that), all in the name of a good night's entertainment. Of course, a dance competition would not be complete without partners for these ravishing-looking 'ladies', so we had a number of our lady members dress in evening suits to accompany the very shy and retiring dancers to face the judges and our M.C. for the evening.

The judging panel did not cover themselves in glory. I believe that they did not seem to know a lot about dance as they eliminated couple after couple from the competition. However, the purpose was to provide a night of entertainment which will not be forgotten for a while, and I can confidently say that we achieved that. Well done to all who took part and let me take this opportunity to say a word of thanks to Louise Forde and Maria Waddock who spent hours trying to make some of these guys and dolls look appealing - a tough job but one well done.

Well, back to the real business of Courtown and we have another busy week ahead. On Wednesday we will have an invitation singles (eleven holes), on Thursday we will have the Seniors Open, Saturday's competition will be an invitation fourball sponsored by Stafford's Bakery, and on Sunday it will be a ladies' and gents' singles.

Saturday, August 28, singles sponsored by John Coone: 1, Keith Davis (10), 4 up; 2, Mark Stephens (16), 3 up (last nine); 3, Tom Foster (12), 3 up; gross, Alan McDonald (3), 4 down; veterans, Paddy Hughes (16), level.

Sunday, August 29, medal sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors: 1, Seamus Kennelly (9), 69 (countback); 2, Paul Keogh (16), 69 (countback); 3, Neil Long (6), 69; gross, Neville Steedman (2), 74; 4, Michael Murphy (26), 70; veterans, Mike O'Reilly (13), 70.

COURTOWN LADIES

Sunderland Oil were the sponsors of last Tuesday's ladies' competition. In the absence of Colin Sunderland, his wife, Mairéad, presented the prizes. She complimented all who played and congratulated the winners, Maria Coone and Eilis Kinsella, who won on countback with 52 points. Marion Siggins, the lady Captain, thanked Sunderland Oil for their generous sponsorship and looked forward to their continued involvement with the club.

Congratulations to Woodbrook on winning the Finn Trophy on Thursday last in Courtown over Dunmore East. Well done to the committee for organising the event and to Peggy Finn and the Finn family, Gorey, for their continued sponsorship of this long-running and very popular competition.

The course is in terrific condition and, while the wind on Thursday proved to be very challenging, the standard of golf was excellent. Congratulations to the lucky winners.
