COURTOWN

Once again we have had a very busy week at Courtown. On Thursday last we had the Tomás Funge Memorial Cups, an open competition for boys and girls. Junior Chairman, Paddy Dore, was delighted with the response we received from clubs all around the province.

On Saturday there was no club competition because of the large numbers from Prospect Park and Tara Cove societies, two groups whom we are delighted to welcome each year. It proved to be a very busy day on and off the course as the clubhouse was packed that night for dinner and entertainment after the golfing. Sunday again was another very busy day with an invitation fourball (any combination ) sponsored by Donohoe Mercedes.

The coming week looks to be another busy time for all involved in the club. On Thursday we will have our Junior Captain's (Darragh Hobbs) prize. There will be a fourball (any combination) on Saturday but there will also be an outing from Tara Meadows from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Again we are delighted to welcome this society each year.

Sunday's competition will be an open singles sponsored by Wyse Estates. If you have not as yet seen the ads. on our website you are reminded to make a note in your diary for Saturday, August 28, when we will have a very special dance competition in the clubhouse, Strictly Come Dancing with a twist. This promises to be a night of entertainment not to be missed. All we will say at this stage is remember The Rose of Kiltennel from last year.

Last weekend saw the Captain, Joe O'Donnell, and lady Captain, Mary Ryan, present their prizes to both the gents and ladies. The weather was glorious, with the sun shining all day, but the wind picked up as the day went on, meaning those who got out earlier had the better conditions. A full timesheet of eager golfers teed off from 8 a.m., with the men going out first, to facilitate a sixhole play-off for the top 12 qualifiers.

The play-off was tense and put the players under a lot of pressure. However, the leader going into the play-off, Paul Nangle, held his nerve well and held off a very strong challenge from Brian Farrell, as the last two out on the course. He even withstood the huge pressure of having to sink a very tricky 12 foot putt on the 18th - in front of a packed clubhouse balcony out to watch the excitement unfold.

The ladies' prize too was well contested and a very exciting game, and here Jackie Hamilton played exceptional golf in testing windy conditions to hold off the challenge of Anne Donnellan.

An extremely enjoyable night ensued in the clubhouse after, where the very popular winners received fantastic prizes of Waterford Crystal centrepieces from Captains Joe and Mary. The past Captains of the club formed a guard of honour to welcome the current Captains in at the start of the evening. Captains Joe and Mary gave well-received speeches, and lovely food was prepared by the Seafield catering staff. Much craic was had during the night, with the band 'Off The Cuff' providing the music for the night of dancing that followed...long into the morning!!
