ENNISCORTHY

The Jim Whitney Shield was inaugurated in 1983 and it continues to honour the memory of a great man, member and tireless worker for Enniscorthy Golf Club. Though Jim sadly passed away in June of 1988, the torch has been kept alive by Seán O'Leary and his helpers who organise this annual event.

Though entries from clubs from the region has fallen off due to the current economic climate, those clubs who enter their eight-man team for €150, which includes a meal, enjoy the inter-club competitiveness of the event in a less serious tone than other tournaments but nevertheless every club goes out to win. This year, as in other years, the weather was fine for the event and all visitors had nothing but praise for the condition of the course. Again top marks to John Hutchinson, clubhouse chef, for the choice and quality of the dinner served and thanks to our sponsor, Tommy O'Rourke, who gave a good account of himself on the course, having been substituted for long-time participant Ben Bernie who was unable to partake due to prior commitments.

A special thanks to all the management of clubs who entered a team and to all those members of clubs who took the time off to participate. John Jordan was called upon to address the clubs present and thanked Seán O'Leary and John McGuire for organising the event, making the point that everyone's a winner. Waterford Golf Club took second place when 'Team D' recorded a spectacular score of 48 points, bringing their score to 127. The winning Enniscorthy team pairings consisted of John Walsh and Ger Turner, John R. Jordan and Dan Byrne, Pat Jordan and Jimmy Bolger, Tommy O'Rourke and Eddie Somers with 134 points.

A worthy winner was found in Karl Cullen (10), carding a 65 in glorious sunshine on Sunday last in the ATB Tyres-sponsored monthly medal and player of the year qualifier.

Results: 1, Karl Cullen (10), 65 (back nine); 2, Ned Hogan (11), 65 (back nine); gross, Lar Ronan (3), 74; 3, Jack Murphy (11), 65 (back nine); 4, Paul Kavanagh (12), 65; 5, Shane Dunphy (16), 67; Senior, Michael Coffey (5), 70. Saturday and Sunday: C.S.S. 73.

The popular nine-hole midweek continues to see great scores posted, with this week's bank officials-sponsored competition winner carding 26 points.

Sunday's big competition is the Walter Bourke & Sonssponsored gents' open Intermediate Scratch.

There will be some disruption to the course on Monday while verti-draining takes place, and ladies' Tuesday (August 24) will be sponsored by Phelim Byrne Cookery Academy. NEW ROSS SENIORS

We had another big crowd on Thursday last but, with a lot of green fees on the course, it took much longer than usual for the 15 teams to complete their round. Four and a half hours is unheard of among our group and it was indeed hard to concentrate with the hold-up on almost every hole.

The course once again was in magnificent condition and is really a credit to the ground staff for all their dedicated work in maintaining such a high standard right through the year. Once again the super-fast greens was where the game was won and lost with putts agonisingly drifting past the cup and often the one back too failed to go in.

If any team broke 90 they were going to be at least in the first three and, compiling a very good score of 92 points, Richie Aylward (15), Michael Long (20), John Fitzpatrick (20) and Larry Shannon (20) (he had the name of Shanahan on the day) took home the 'Paddy'.

In the runner-up spot on 89 points came Jim Meggs (14), Jim Ryan (15), Tom O'Shea (20) and Tom Kent (21). Only a point further back, filling the third spot on 88 points, were the team of Hughie O'Connor (15), Johnny Watson (16), Larry Doyle (19) and John Joe Murray (19).

Nearest the pin prizes went to Jim Meggs -two feet from the pin on the ninth hole - and Jim 'Dublin' Ryan on the 14th where he left his tee shot a mere 15 inches short. Glad to report that both players duly sank the resulting putts for birdies and they well deserved the sleeves of Titleist balls.

This coming Thursday we have no team outing as the club open singles is on. We face further disruption on Thursday, August 26, when the ladies' section have organised a charity day in aid of the Community Hospital (not the Community Workshop as mentioned last week). Thirty-four of our members have already signalled their intention to play in Bunclody on September 9 when the New Ross course is closed for coring of the greens.

This will be a special outing with prizes for the first six teams home. Anyone else interested in travelling, please contact Jamesie Murphy on 051421151 as soon as possible in order to be included in the draw for teams.

BALLYMONEY

Wednesday's nine-hole competition was well attended and, for the second week in a row, Tom Whelan (18) and Justin O'Leary (19) were in the prizes. A group of players finished on 22 points and Tom, Justin and Wally O'Brien (16) were first, second and third in that order on countback.

Saturday's stableford competition was played in blazing sunshine and not surprisingly some very good scores were returned. Seán Furlong (13) won the first prize with an excellent 43 points. Brian Delaney (11) held off Paddy Brown for second prize on countback. Both had 42 points.

Tara Meadows matchplay: John Somers beat Leo Gleeson.

The club would like to extend congratulations and commiserations in equal measure to member Ed O'Keeffe (5) who performed absolutely outstandingly well in the prestigious Lord Mayor's Cup in Clontarf Golf Club all week. Ed came through a strokeplay competition to qualify for this testing matchplay event of 64 players, all from four to nine handicaps, and was only beaten on the back nine in the final on Saturday. He lost out 3 and 2 to a Clontarf member.

This event has been in existence 58 years at Clontarf and has seen some illustrious participants including Ryder Cup star Philip Walton and also Martin Sludds, neither winning it incidentally! Well done Ed!

Wednesday sees another non-qualifying ninehole, and Sunday next is the August medal (strokeplay from the back tees).

WEXFORD LADIES

Thursday, August 12, 18-hole stableford: 1, Phil Flood (24), 36 points (back two); 2, Ann Conway (36), 36 points (back nine); gross, Irene Sheehan (14), 23 points; best 36, Una Seaver, 35 points; Senior, Emily Power (18), 33 points.

Last Thursday's competition, which was sponsored by Dick Kelly & Sons Ltd., was played in perfect conditions for golf. Well done to all the winners, and the presentation of prizes will take place in the clubhouse this Thursday.

Pump Supplies Ireland are the sponsors of this week's strokes and medal competition, and we look forward to seeing a big turn-out. The timesheet is now out for the lady President's prize on August 29.

All roads led to the Island Golf Club in Cork on Friday last to support our Senior players who produced a magnificant display of golf in the All-Ireland finals, but unfortunately they were beaten by the favourites, Royal Portrush. Many congratulations to the panel, managers and selectors.
