NEW ROSS SENIORS

Wednesday March 10 2010

In glorious sunny conditions, 57 intrepid Seniors went out in 12 x 4 and 3 x 3 man teams on Thursday last in search of the elusive prizes. Even though conditions were absolutely perfect, the newly-cored greens found many players out, either leaving a putt short or else racing it past the hole.

In the circumstances, any team breaking 90 should be in the winners' enclosure, and that was the way it turned out, with two teams tied on 92 points. Again the pair could not be separated over the last nine holes and it took the better score over the last six to decide the issue.

Here the quartet of Paddy Shannon (9), Willie Whitty (15), Mick Wade (20) and Brian Dolan (28) were declared victors. A gallant second came a three-man team enjoying all the allowances and only beaten on the countback. The trio were led by the former great G.A.A. man, Dan Quigley (16), with his compatriots Michael Brennan (18) and Richie Byrne (22).

In third position on 91 came Willie Byrne (11), Tommy Tyler (18), Reiner Opperman (18) and Aidan O Connor (21), but did this team make a slip up on the 18th hole where all four were to count as they only showed two scoring on their card?

Strangely enough, no player was within the tape limits for nearest the pin on the 11th and 14th holes, so the prizes go forward to this week. Reminding all players that the draw is at 10.45 a.m. sharp each Thursday.
