Golf

COURTOWN

Wednesday March 10 2010

With the weather being so fine at the start of last week, the greens staff were able to go ahead with the hollow-coring of the greens as planned, but the fact that the greens were still full of sand seemed to have little efffect on the members and the standard of golf played again this week.

Our competition was a 13-hole ladies' and gents' singles, and I believe that the winner in the gents' section had an amazing five birdies on the trot. Low handicap or not, that is some golfing.

We had a big turn-out for the open Seniors on Thursday, with a large precentage of those who played being visitors.

Results: 1, Neville Steedman (2), 32 points (last nine); 2, Tony Smyth (17), 32 points; 3, Mark Stevens (18), 31 points; gross, Paul Kavanagh (7), 22 points (last nine).

Ladies: 1, Denise Burke (25), 30 points; 2, Eileen Moriarty (28), 28 points (last nine).

This weekend there will be a fourball on Saturday and Sunday, but the big event will no doubt be the final of the Azure-sponsored ladies' Winter League. This final is to be played on Sunday afternoon and we wish the best of luck to all who are taking part. We hope the weather will remain as favourable as it has been for the last few weeks.
