THE WEXFORD Minor footballers travelled to Dundalk on Saturday last where they played the first round of the Leinster League. It was a tight, end-to-end game which eventually went the way of the hosts following a strong second-half display. Wexford opened the game well with the midfield pairing, Dean Wright and Colm Kehoe, ensuring a good supply of ball for the forwards.

Kieran Butler, who excelled throughout, was winning a lot of primary possession and his deliveries to the full-forward line created three frees, with Alan Tobin being fouled on three consecutive occasions, leading to three scores for Seán Ring.

Louth hit back with two points from frees although the Wexford fullback line of Joey Ahearn, Eddie Hughes and Colm Browne were excellent throughout the first-half. Wexford led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time, with a superb point from Graham Cullen rounding off the scoring.

Louth stormed into the game in the first ten minutes of the second-half and dominated the midfield exchanges, winning almost all of the breaking ball. Four consecutive points put them two ahead before an excellent score from Seán Ring after good work from Jonathon Bealin brought Wexford back into the game.

Louth scored three points on the trot as Wexford showed signs of tiring before a superb goal from Alan Tobin left only a point between the teams.

Wexford pressed hard for the equaliser but were caught on the break as Louth broke up field to score the insurance point.
