Saturday week next, March 20, will be a special night for Shelmalier G.A.A. when the club invites all the descendants of the famous 1910 All-Ireland hurling-winning team together for the first time to celebrate the centenary of this famous victory on November 20, 1910. This promises to be a night of nostalgia and no doubt many tales and stories will be recalled between all the family groups, with families and friends rekindling long-lost friendships.
The 'Families of the 1910 Men' function takes place in Hotel Curracloe at 8 p.m. A representative from each family group will be presented with a special commissioned plaque and commemoration scroll and there will also be a display of items from the 1910 period. The night will conclude with music and light refreshments. The Shelmalier G.A.A. club would like to cordially all its members, players, parents and supporters to this function, so come along whether you have any connection with the 1910 team or not.
There were no winners of last week's Shelmalier development lotto when the numbers drawn were 9, 13, 15 and 26. There were five match three winners, each receiving ¤40 - Ita Wilson, Brian Lally, Stephen Doyle, C. Hurley and Michael Hogan. Shelmalier G.A.A. club would like to sincerely thank the many people who are supporting this exciting new local lotto on a weekly basis.
Three Shelmalier football teams took to the field last weekend and all three recorded impressive victories.
The Seniors faced Bannow on Saturday evening in Grantstown. Shels started brightly but had a lot of missed chances through frees, points and a goal opportunity. Colin Redmond finally got them on the scoreboard with a pointed free.
Tommy Barron and Colin scored from play but consistently poor passing by the Shels allowed Bannow to keep in touch with three points from play. Barry O'Connor then got injured and had to be carried off the field with a broken leg. The Shels became slightly disorganised now and lost their shape.
However, Colin Redmond kept them in front with two pointed frees with Bannow replying with one pointed free. Half-time score: Shels 0-5, Bannow 0-4.
In the second-half the Shels upped the tempo considerably and set up some very good scoring chances. Tommy Barron, Brian Doyle, Derek Walsh and Colin Redmond scored points and Derek Walsh scored a goal. During this period Bannow only scored 0-1 but wasted a huge amount of scoring chances.
The final score was Shels 1-12, Bannow 05, but it was very obviously the first game of the league with both teams needing to do a lot of improvement. Best for Shels were André O'Brien, Ciarán O'Shaughnessy, Tommy Barron, Brian Doyle, Colin Redmond, Aidan Murphy and Colm Tynan.
The third team took on Gusserane's second team on Saturday evening in Hollymount and recorded a narrow 0-7 to 0-6 victory, with a last-minute point from sharpshooter Conor Byrne separating the sides. It was a well-contested and enjoyable game throughout.
Conor Byrne was the Shels main marksman, scoring 0-6 from frees, the last one coming in the last minute, and Willie O'Shaughnessy scored 0-1 from play. However, Denis Kelly ran the show at centreback with Conor O'Shaughnessy and Paddy Murphy playing well in the full-back line and Darren Shiggins and Jamie Horan trying very hard at midfield.
Team: Paddy Kelly; Noel Mythen, Paddy Murphy, Conor O'Shaughnessy; Conor Ryan, Denis Kelly, Shane O'Connor; Darren Shiggins, Jamie Horan; Pádraig Scully, James Shiggins, Willie O'Shaughnessy; Seán Walsh, Conor Byrne, Ibar 'Hurler' Murphy. Subs. - Cathal O'Shaughnessy for J. Shiggins, James Murphy for Scully.
Shels second team played Oylegate in Oylegate on Sunday evening. Shels started strongly with points from Mark Tobin, John Veale and Chris Gordon. Oylegate replied with a point from play and missed two further scoreable chances. Shels were on top but failed to capitalise on their dominance and only ended the half 0-6 to 0-1 ahead.
In the second-half Cathal Gaule got a shoulder injury and Emmet O'Leary got a leg injury. With only one substitute available, Shels played for 15 minutes with 14 men. Oylegate now took over with Trevor Moulton and M.J. Reck in particular good form.
The Shels had been leading by 0-8 to 0-3 but this was quickly whittled down and the sides were level with ten minutes remaining. Rory O'Leary then togged out for the Shels and went in at full-forward. Gradually the Shels got their shape back and they got a vital point by Mark Tobin to hold out for a one-point win.
Best for Shels were Colm Parker (goal), Conor O'Shaughnessy, Vinny Parker, Emmet O'Leary, Jamie Horan, Willie O'Shaughnessy, Mark Tobin, John Veale and Chris Gordon. Scorers: Mark Tobin (0-5, 1 free), John Veale and Chris Gordon (0-2 each), James Muphy (0-1).
