Grants from provincial council not passed on

Tuesday January 17 2012

THE FARCICAL nature of Wexford G.A.A. finances left club delegates gasping when told their grants were dispatched to pay off creditors.

Grants received by Wexford G.A.A. from the provincial council amounted to €73,750, with €2,000 of this sum earmarked for the St. Patrick's Park development, leaving a balance of €71,750 for a set number of clubs.

'This money is still outstanding to clubs,' said County Chairman, Diarmuid Devereux. 'It was offset against creditors during the course of the year,' he added.

Then Development Officer and current Vice-chairman, Micheál Martin (pictured), told delegates that he was very annoyed about this when informed at a meeting. 'I was of the understanding monies came in and were dispatched out to the clubs. I was very annoyed on January 3 this year that the grants had not been paid to clubs.'

The County Chairman said he hoped to be in a position in a couple of weeks' time to pay out the monies. 'I have to wait for this amount of money to come in to cover the grants. We don't have an overdraft. It's disappointing and disgusting that it has come to this, but you have seen the finances for yourselves.' Bannow-ballymitty have spent €500,000 on the Grantstown development and delegate Paddy Hannon said the club had made a commitment.

'We would prefer going home from here tonight knowing exactly where we stand. I cannot see how you can write a cheque looking at those figures. I would prefer going out of here knowing realistically when we would be paid rather than getting a promise.'

County Chairman: 'Clubs will be paid by the end of the calendar month'.
