Godkin's gang to take on Carlow
CHAMPIONS TWO years ago for the first time, the Wexford Football League have sent out a clear message of their intentions as they come up against their neighbours from the Carlow League in the Oscar Traynor Trophy quarter-final at the St. Patrick's grounds in Graiguecullen on Saturday afternoon next.
Having qualified from a tough group with a final round victory over the Waterford League, manager John Godkin is confident that his charges can once again deliver, and qualify for the semi-final.
Boosted by the addition of Paul Murphy to the squad, along with Tiarnan Rossiter and Shane Dempsey, Godkin will be selecting from a full squad with the exception of Craig Mcguire who has been ruled out with a recurring knee injury. Also back is Shamrock Rovers player, Ricky Fox, who missed the Waterford game through injury, while both Leighton Gleeson and Anthony Russell are expected to overcome slight knocks.
Given the strength of the squad, Godkin finds himself in a difficult but still ideal position, as he contemplates his final 16 players. He will be left having to leave out a number of excellent players when announcing his final selection.
'We have practically a full squad. The squad this year is one of the strongest we have had which is excellent as it leaves us with so many options,' he said.
'We are coming up against a quality Carlow League side who have home advantage. But we are satisfied with our preparation, having had a game against the Leinster Senior League last Wednesday night.
'It's going to be difficult, but hopefully we can get through,' he added.
Godkin has quality players in Leighton Gleeson, Anthony Russell, Lee Chin, Lee Walker, Keith Kearney, Warren Broaders, Jason Murphy and Chris Kenny.
Given the nature of their progress to date, it will be surprising should they fail to secure a semi-final spot.
