Fr. Murphy's ladies prepare for busy year
Wednesday March 10 2010
FR. MURPHY'S ladies' football and camogie club are preparing for another year of flying the purple and gold colours in London.
The camogie team is back in serious training, as they prepare to defend the Birmingham International Tournament title.
It is a title they have won for the last two years, but it will be more difficult this time around, as they have seven players on the county panel who are playing the following day, so they will have to watch their clubmates from the sidelines.
There are a few new girls from Wexford joining the club and they are indeed most welcome.
The footballers will start training in the next week. They will be going for a four-in-a-row of Senior county titles, so it will be a high pressure year.
The big news recently was from the Ladies' Universities championship final, in which Robert Gordon University of Aberdeen became the first side from Scotland to take the cup, beating strong favourites St. Mary's from Twickenham in the final which was a thrilling match played in terrible weather conditions.
Fr. Murphy's player Elizabeth Breen, from Horeswood, has been starring on the university team for the past three years and was absolutely delighted to win through. Liz won a Senior championship with Fr. Murphy's in 2008 as well as an All-Ireland with London.
She is returning to the purple and gold colours in July when her studies will be completed.
Her opponents in the university final, St. Mary's, had two current Fr. Murphy's players in their ranks, namely Michelle Breheny from Galway and Shauna McMenamin from Tyrone.
The Fr. Murphy's are always pleased to hear from anyone wanting to join the club, or indeed to support it through our online lottery, details of which can be found on www.frmurphysgaa.co.uk, or on our facebook page.
