Clubs on the rise

WITH THE affiliation of Fethard, Bannow-Ballymitty, Davidstown-Courtnacuddy and Sarsfields last year, the number of ladies' football clubs in Wexford increased to 32, delegates at Convention on Sunday week last were told.

Thirty years after the formation of the County Board, Wexford captured two Under-12 Leinster blitz titles, while the Under-14 squad won All-Ireland blitz honours and the Under-16 side won the international blitz shield.

Loreto Secondary school captured the Senior 'B' and Under-14 'A' Leinster titles, while Bridgetown Vocational College reached the Leinster 'C' final and St. James' won the Leinster Junior Club title.

Taghmon-Camross Gaelic for Mothers team played in Croke Park at half-time in the Junior All-Ireland final, while Crossabeg-Ballymurn became the first ladies' football club to receive a bursary of ¤5,000 from Tesco, and members of Ballygarrett-Réalt na Mara completed the Grab your Whistle course.

Pat Quill was inaugurated as President of Cumann Peil Gael na mBan during the year. Peter Rice was re-elected national Treasurer and a member of the Disciplinary committee, while Liz Quill was re-elected to the Appeals committee and Peadar O'Connor was Assistant P.R.O. for Leinster.

Sponsors Dave Bernie of Berniefilter and Jim Bolger were welcomed and thanked, along with Yvonne Sidney of Wexford Renault for the sponsorship of watches to the New Ross team, winners of the District league.

Thanks were also expressed to the businesses and individuals who gave sponsorship towards the table quiz, and members were asked to support them in turn whenever possible.

The local media were thanked for their coverage of games during the year, as well as the outgoing officers of County Board, members of sub-committees, management of all county teams, and county players at all grades who provided us with lots of enjoyment during the year. All concerned were thanked for their time, dedication and commitment, along with their families.

The first County Board meeting of 2010 will be held in Ferrycarrig Hotel on Monday, February 8, at 8 p.m. Clubs are asked to please return their nominations for vacant positions on County Board before the commencement of this meeting.

Wexford will commence their Bord Gais Energy National League campaign on Sunday next with a home game versus Westmeath.
