Champion Cats to back good cause

Wednesday February 24 2010

REIGNING All-Ireland champions Kilkenny have answered Wexford's call, with the two sides meeting in a Senior hurling challenge at the Oulart-The Ballagh grounds for the McDonald family benefit night on Wednesday of next week (March 4).

The Wexford family lost their home to a fire in December and have now re-applied for planning permission.

Niall and Getta, and their four daughters, Shaunine (7), Allanah (5), Aoibhinn (3) and Sadhbh (1), were lucky to escape when the blaze began as they lay in their beds on Wednesday, December 16, last.

Niall is a well-known referee in the county and played hurling and football with the Crossabeg-Ballymurn club.

He also played Senior inter-county hurling with Wexford from 1990 to 1995, and Senior football in 1985.

Kilkenny manager Brian Cody has promised to bring his strongest available side, while Colm Bonnar also hopes to be at full strength with his Wexford team as both build up for their National League campaigns.

The game has a 7.30 p.m. start and admission will be ¤10.

Tickets, either purchased in advance or on the night, will be entered into a draw for signed Kilkenny and Wexford jerseys.

They are available from local clubs, the Wexford Park office, any organising committee member, or Garry Laffan (Wexford District), Michael Bowe (New Ross District), Eamonn Mernagh (Enniscorthy District) or Larry Kehoe (Gorey District).
