YOUNG PEOPLE from New Ross and Enniscorthy were spared none of the shocking effects of irresponsible driving when they took part in a Rotary awareness programme at the Wexford Youths Football Complex.
Students from St. Mary's Secondary School, New Ross, and Colaiste Bride, Enniscorthy, were the first participants in a new series of sessions hosted by the Rotary Club of Wexford with the help of an Garda Siochana, road accident victims, insurance industry representatives and Accident and Emergency staff from Wexford General Hospital.
The programme, called ' Just One Life', includes practical demonstrations using garda drivers in cars supplied by Wexford Renault.
It is offered to all 22 second level schools in the county and will be rolled out between now and May 2010. Since the programme began in County Wexford two years ago, over 2,000 students have availed of it.
Michael Brand of the Rotary Club said the driver awareness initiative includes an unashamed shock factor and pulls no punches in terms of informing teenagers of the reality of road accidents.
The students were addressed by County Manager Eddie Breen who spoke about the County Council's responsibility for road safety.
Wexford Rotary acknowledges the support of the County Council in ensuring the success of the initiative and is also grateful to Mick Wallace for the use of the Wexford Youths soccer complex.
