Students read at Holocaust Memorial day

Tuesday January 31 2012

THREE STUDENTS from Gorey Community School were honoured at the weekend to deliver readings at the Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration in the Mansion House in Dublin.

They were part of a group of students and teachers from the school who were in attendance at the event. This was the tenth annual memorial day to take place in the Republic of Ireland and is organised by the Holocaust Education Trust, Ireland (HETI).

The History Department of Gorey Community School has forged strong links with the Holocaust Trust in recent years and has had Bergen Belsen survivor Tomi Reichental speak to the students several times in the school.

Because of this the History department was invited to attend this extremely moving and solemn event in the Mansion House. Twenty students and five History teachers represented the school while three of the students were given the honour of reading that evening.

Attended by dignatories from the world of politics and the arts, the ceremony was opened by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Andrew Montague. President Michael D Higgins gave an unforgettable keynote address that set the tone for the evening.

Other speakers included Minister for Justice Alan Shatter, writer Jennifer Johnston, campaigner Sr Stanislaus Kennedy and many more. Gorey students Maeve Cassidy, Michael Dwyer and Caitlin Moran were selected as part of twelve young people who read names of Holocaust victims to the audience; this was indeed one of the most touching moments of the ceremony. The audience was full of praise for these young people's contribution.

Later this year the Gorey students will Auschwitz as part of their annual History tour.
