Postman Jackie was a dedicated family man
Wednesday March 10 2010
THERE WAS widespread sadness across the Ballycullane and Saltmills areas recently upon learning of the passing of the late Jackie Furlong.
Jackie, who was a former postman from Tintern, Saltmills, passed away peacefully on February 12 at his daughter Peggie's home at Abbeyview, Campile, in his 95th year.
During his life Jackie gave 35 years of service as a postman for the Ballycullane and Saltmills areas.
He will be best remembered for the cheerful words he had for everyone he came in contact with and he always had a sweet biscuit in the bottom of his postbag for any children he met.
Originally from Tintern, Jackie was the only son of John and Maryanne Furlong, with four sisters; Rosie, Dolly, Lilly and the late Cathy who sadly passed away last year.
In the 1940s he married his loving wife Stasia Whelan from Ballycullane and they had two daughters Peggie and Kathleen.
Jackie loved his native Tintern and was very knowledgeable about local history, particularly the history of Tintern Abbey.
Gardening was a great love of Jackie's and he loved to potter about in his own garden. Reading was his other great hobby and he particularly loved to read autobiographies and historical books.
Jackie was predeceased by his wife Stasia who died in April 1993 and deeply regretted by his daughters Peggie and Kathleen, son-in-law Pete, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, sisters, nephews, nieces, relatives, friends and neighbours.
He was laid to rest in Ballycullane Cemetery after mass in the Holy Spirit Church, St. Leonards on February 14. May he rest in peace.
