New choral group is aiming for musical excellence

Wednesday August 29 2007

A new semi-professional choral group will be formed in Wexford in early September, under the baton of local based composer and musician, Sue Furlong.

'Vocare' is the name of the choir, which aims at providing 'musical excellence' through the performance of a variety of musical genres including classical, contemporary, pop and world music.

Anyone with a love of singing, a good quality voice, and a sense of rhythm is invited to participate in the choir, which will audition for members on September 8 and 9 in the Franciscan Friary Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Anyone interested in auditioning should prepare two pieces to sing on the day, but if this is not feasible Sue will guide people through a variety of scales and clapping exercises.

Places will be offered to people from all over County Wexford and neighbouring counties. It would be an advantage for interested members to have some level of music reading skills, but this is not a requirement.

The programme to be undertaken during the inaugural sessions include Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalsm; excerpts from Karl Jenkin's Adiemus, which is written in African style, some latin American music, and some of Paul Simon's songs including 'Homeless' from Graceland.
