Man stole goods worth € 122.95 from four different shops

Wednesday March 10 2010

A MAN who stole goods worth € 122.95 from four businesses on Wexford's Main Street in the one day has appeared before the local district court.

Shane Lawlor (20), of Ardinagh Great, Foulksmills, appeared before Judge William Earley in connection with the thefts on December 3 last.

Inspector Pat McDonald said that Lawlor was arrested at Super Drug having stole ¤25 worth of toiletries there.

He was questioned by Gardaí and it emerged that, earlier that day, he had also stolen DVDs worth ¤76 from Heatons; toiletries worth € 19.95 from Shaws, and household goods worth ¤2 from the Two Euro Shop. Inspector McDonald said that Lawlor, who has no previous convictions, was cooperative at all times.

Eva Lalor, for Lawlor, handed Judge Earley a letter concerning the defendant from his former school. Ms Lalor said that Lawlor, who had never been in trouble before, was with his younger cousin that day and, despite being older, was under his influence.

'He didn't understand the full implications of what he was doing,' said Ms Lalor, who felt that Lawlor possesses 'no real criminal intent'.

'He just didn't consider the consequences of his actions at all,' said Ms Lalor, pointing out that one of the four thefts involved goods to the value of just ¤2 – coming as it did from the Two Euro Shop.

Judge Early adjourned the matter until May 4 next and ordered a probation officer's report. He indicated that if it is favourable and Lawlor stays out of trouble in the meantime he may dismiss the charges under the Probation Act.
