Crowd of 200 voice their concern at education cutbacks
UP TO 200 angry teachers and parents gathered in the Horse and Hound on Monday night to voice their concerns over the recently announced education cutbacks.
The meeting, which was called by a number of groups including the Teachers Union of Ireland and the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland, was addressed by Principals from all secondary schools in the New Ross District and Angela Dunne ex-president of INTO.
'We are happy with how it went...The rally in Dublin will be our next step and we will review the situation after that,' said Niamh King secretary of the INTO in New Ross.
The recent cuts were highlighted during the meeting and the impact discussed. Parents also voiced concerns at the lack of capital funding of education in New Ross.
Among those present was Deputy Sean Connick. 'I am very much aware of the difficulties some of the Budget implications will cause. I outlined the positives in it when I got a chance,' said Deputy Connick. 'I cant say I was happy to be there I wasn't – it is not pleasant to be at any meeting with regard to cuts.'
Cllr. John Dwyer said the mood was clear as 'speaker after speaker condemned the cuts and slammed the government parties for their bloody minded attitude towards New Ross schools.'
