Civic reception for Gráinne
NEW ROSS was gearing up to officially welcome the country's latest sporting sensation last night (Monday) as swimmer Gráinne Murphy was being afforded a civic welcome.
New Ross Town Council was busy preparing for the celebrations yesterday, which were due to kick off around 6 p.m.
Huge numbers of Gráinne's family, friends and fans were expected to gather at the swimming pool car park in Barrack Lane for the civic welcome.
During the celebrations Gráinne was to be presented with the prestigious New Ross 800 medal, one of the highest accolades from the Town Council.
She is only the second recipient of the medal for her outstanding achievement at the European Championships in Budapest. President Mary McAleese was presented with the first ever medal in 2007.
A small presentation was also to be made to Gráinne's coach Ronald Claes to mark his contribution and visit to the town.
'Up to 700 people have come into the Tholsel and signed the Book of Congratulations for Gráinne, so that just shows you the level of support for her,' said Town Clerk, David Minogue.
