Citizens honoured at Tidy Towns awards

KEEN GARDENERS and green fingered enthusiasts were to be found in St. Michael's Theatre last Wednesday night as a plethora of prizes were presented at the annual Tidy Towns gala night.
The awards ceremony was hosted by the Chairperson of the Tidy Towns group, Tomas Kavanagh, with Minister Sean Connick, Brian Bailey of the Traders Association and Vice New Ross Town Council Chairperson Annette Larkin all in attendance to present the many prizes.
Sarah Buckley from Bawnmore Terrace picked up two awards on the night for having the best hanging baskets and for having the best small garden. Helen Purcell from Barrack Lane, was the runner-up in the small garden category.
Margaret Bennett from Portersland won the large garden category, with Maureen and Michael Fleming from Chambersland in second place and in the medium garden category Mrs. O'Brien from Tower Grove was in first place, followed by Brendan Kidd from Brandon Park in second place.
The best front garden award was presented to Margaret Katus from Michael Street.
Two prizes were presented in the best school category, with the CBS Primary School getting an award for the best clean up and litter picking and Michael Street Boys School awarded for having the best front garden.
First prize went to New Ross Community Workshop for outstanding effort.
Corcoran's Bar in the Irishtown took home first prize for having the best pub front and in the best shop front category Bailey's on South Street were awarded first place and Biddy Walsh's Hairdressing on South Street was awarded second place.
Barrack Lane was deemed the best local authority estate, while Brandon Park was named as the best private estate.
Bridge Doyle from Inishross Guest House on Mary Street took home a prize for having the best floral display, while one of the most prestigious prizes, the best overall garden went to John Bennett of Assumption Terrace in Rosbercon.
All the various categories were judged by a judge from Co. Wicklow in July.
Meanwhile, a special presentation by Minister Sean Connick was made on the night to honour outgoing Tidy Towns Chairperson Bid Ryan for all her hard work and effort during her term of office.
