NEW ROSS Celtic AFC and New Ross RAPID have been presented with a national award for excelling in the Intercultural Football Standards Grassroots pilot 2009.

The Minister for Integration, John Curran TD presented the national award to the two groups at the FAI headquarters last Thursday.

The grassroots pilot was designed as a quality mark scheme that encourages partnerships between local clubs and ethnic minority communities. The main aim is to promote greater connectivity between grassroots football and diverse local communities and to set out pathways into football for those interested in playing or just volunteering.

Anthony Bailey, New Ross RAPID coordinator, and Ger Feeney, New Ross Celtic AFC, were present at the FAI HQ to receive the award from Minister John Curran and FAI President Mr David Blood. Also present on the night was a group from Youth New Ross.

Seven projects were honoured on the night. They each received ¤1,000 to support intercultural football activities during 2010.

According to RAPID coordinator Anthony Bailey the success of the local project was due to the support received from FAI Development Officer, Will Doyle, and the other stakeholders including Youth New Ross, St Canice's NS and New Ross Town Council.

Some of the activities carried out during 2009 that lead to the award included Thursday Night Football at the Town Park, Indoor Futsal, English through Football at St. Canice's, Rosbercon and the Ross Celtic Open Day.
