Bronze Age replica boat embarks on its historic maiden voyage

Wednesday July 25 2007

The crew of the St. Louis proudly rowed from Enniscorthy to the Ferrycarrig on Wednesday afternoon as their very own man-made Bronze Age boat took to the water on it's very first maiden voyage.

This was the first time in a very long time that a Bronze Age boat would have been seen rowing down the River Slaney.

Six hours and two refreshment breaks later, the crew of the St. Louis had completed their maiden voyage.

The crew, which comprised of Nick Ryan, Nick Murray, Brendan Power, Michael Barren, Andy McGarry, Joe O' Mahony and Peter Hanley and Tom Kehoe, began building the boat in November 2006, under the tutelage of Community Artist, Andi McGarry, following a meeting in the SWWCDP in Ramsgrange.

When the vessel was completed it was 21 ft long and contained seven seats.

The entire project was funded by W.O.R.D, Wexford County Council and the South West Wexford CDP.
