G.A.A. CLUB A.G,M.

Over fifty attended the Annual General Meeting of St. Abbans Adamstown G.A.A. club that took place in Raheen Community Centre on Sunday 15th January. It was most encouraging to see so many of the younger generation in attendance. A minutes silence was observed at the start of the meeting as a mark of respect to the deceased members of the club.

Some of the outgoing officers did not seek re-election including the chairman Jason Whitty, Secretary John Finn and treasurer Rachel Bradley all of whom did Trojan work during the year gone by and received a standing ovation.

2011 was regarded as a successful year for the club with the winning of the intermediate hurling championship and reaching the premier grade under-21 football final as the highlights on the field of play.

All who helped out the club in any way during the year were thanked and especially those who supported the badly needed fund raising activities.

The following officers were elected for the coming year. Patrons : Fr. Robert Nolan. P.P. Adamstown and Fr. Jim Furlong P.P. Newbawn. Presidents : Willie Foley (Brownstown) and Martin Furlong (Templeshelin). Vice Presidents : Jim Wickham (Raheen) Paddy Murray (Templenacro) Johnny Bradley (Adamstown). Chairman : Harry Curtis (The Boola) ViceChairman. : John Wickham (Raheen). Secretary : Joan Furlong (Templeshelin). Assistant secretary : Ellen Furlong (The Leap). Treasurer : Maura Carroll. (Templenacro). Joint assistant treasurers: John Kent (Ballinamona) Edward Furlong (Adamstown). P.R.O'S. : Jimmy Mc Donald (Newcastle) Richard O'gorman (Raheenduff).

County Board representative - Jimmy Furlong (Ballinaboola) replaces John Boland who served the club well as their rep. for the past seven years and did not seek re-election. New Ross district reps : Nicholas Stafford and Jimmy Mcdonald.

COISTE NA NOG

The Annual General Meeting of the under-age section of the local G.A.A. club (Coiste Na Nog) took place in Newbawn hall on the following night, Monday 16th January and it too was well attended.

The following were elected for the coming year. Chairman : John Wickham, ViceChairman : Michael English. Secretary : Ellen Furlong. Assistant Sec: Helen Furlong. Joint treasurers : John Kent and Eddie Furlong. P.R.O. : Richard O'gorman. Assistant P.R.O. : Jimmy Mc Donald. Registrar : Bridget Kavanagh. County Board Reps.: Ellen Furlong, Michael English, John Wickham, Helen Furlong.

Mentors : Under-8s - Kevin Bates, Sean Furlong, Pat Doyle and Deirdre Whelan. Under-10s : Aidan O'brien, Kevin Bates, Chris Gahan and Deirdre Whelan. Under12s - John Wickham, Ger O'neill, Seamus Mc Manus and Richard O'gorman. Under14s.- Ellen Furlong, T.J. Breen, P.J. Carroll. Under - 16s - Pat Doyle, Michael English and Justin Roche. Under-18s - Tom Connors, John Finn, Dessie Doyle, James Murphy and Michael Doran.

LADIES FOOTBALL A.G.M.

Adamstown Ladiers Football Clib are holding their Annual General Meeting in Newbawn hall on Saturday 28th January at 5.30pm and are hoping for a good attendance.

Parents of the underage girls are especially requested to come along and anyone interested in playing in any grade with the club in 2012 or willing to lend a hand.

COMMUNITY ALERT

Newbawn Parish Council are organising a community alert meeting for Newbawn Hall on Monday 6th February at 8pm.

Community Alert organiser Margaret Quinn and local Garda Peter Buttle will be in attendance to offer advise and to discuss Security and Safety issues. They will also answer any questions that may be put to them in regards to security of home and reporting of any suspicious avtivity.

It is felt that in those present times that it is most important to help out the most vulnerable in the area and to make us more conscious of our own security. Community Alert promotes the best quality of life for people, and in particular older people in rural communities by: Crime prevention, Neighbourliness and Selfreliance, Community Safety and Well-being, Accident prevention, Promotion of Personal Safety, Anti-poverty Focus and Awareness of Social Inclusion. Hopefully there will be a good attendance on the night.

RETIREMENT PARTY

A big crowd attended at Foleys of Newbawn last Friday night for the retirement party for Doctor John Curran who has been G.P. in the area for almost forty years. He was lauded for his great service to the local community and wished well in his retirement, as he was being made a presentation by the local parish council on behalf of the people of Newbawn. The doctor in response thanked the people of the area for their generosity and for their great assistance and friendliness to him since his arrival in 1972.

TIDY TOWNS

Newbawn Tidy Towns group would welcome new members to become involved for the coming year so as to maintain the success in the National Tidy Towns competition and for the benefit of the local village.

The committee are in the process of drawing up plans for Newbawn for the new season and would welcome on board anyone who has some time free and would like to assist in the physical work or if you have a particular skill or expertise that could complement the activities. PENNY BANK.

Newbawn Penny Bank resumed business last week-end. Money can be invested at the back of the church after mass on Saturday night or on Sunday morning and savings can be made for next Christmas as all monies will be paid out during the first week of December.
