SCHOOLS IN ANNUAL COUNTY WEXFORD SINGFEST AT OPERA HOUSE
Wednesday March 10 2010
SUPER singers from four national schools gave it socks on the stage of Wexford Opera House on Friday at the 7th annual County Wexford Singfest.
Primary pupils from Glenbrien, Clongreen, Kilmore and Ballycanew all participated in the concerts which attracted capacity crowds on Friday afternoon and Friday night.
Over several months the children explored music from all over the globe under the direction of Mary Amond-O'Brien and Eanna McKenna.
Among the songs chosen were 'La Cucaracha' from Mexico; some Scandanavian folk songs; 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' from the Lion King; the Hallelujah Chorus from Handels 'Messiah' and the Irish song 'Seothin Seo'.
Each of the schools had a solo song, but the roof was really lifted in the Opera House when the 200 strong choristors joined together.
Accompanying the students on the night were Ollie Hennessy on keyboard, Yvonne Collier, piano; Wiliam McGlynn, bass; and Des Leacy, percussion.
The event is supported by Wexford County Council Arts Department.
