ST. MARY'S Secondary School reverberated to the beat of samba drums throughout Wednesday as students were introduced to the rhythm and beat of South America. Kieran Gallagher from Ka Da Ka Boom Arts, based in Drogheda, took the Transition Year pupils on a musical journey throughout the day exploring the art and fun behind samba drumming.

The students were initially taught how to samba drum and to perform a routine, which involved remembering different rhythms with their feet and hands.

They were then all placed into various groups and developed their own performances based on the rhythms they learned.

Each girl had the opportunity to try out different instruments with their routine and were able to beat various drums and use different percussion instruments.

Organised by teacher Kathleen Woodcock, the workshop was attended by 47 students.
