IT WAS a sell-out success when it made its world premiere in Wexford's Theatre Royal in May, and now Eoin Colfer's new musical ' The Lords of Love' is ready to take on the Deise.

On September 29 the side-splitting musical will be staged for one night only in the Theatre Royal in Waterford, a performance which will help its authors gauge it's popular appeal.

'The Lords of Love' was co-written by Artemis Fowl author Eoin Colfer and Wexford composers Cyril Murphy and Liam Bates.

Packed with big tunes and an hilarious book, from Colfer's witty pen, it was a runaway success in Wexford. With award winning singers Tony Carty and George Lawlor in the two leading roles, the show received stunning reviews in the national press.

However, with a local audience for its first outing the writers want the show to go before a crowd who will neither know the performers, or have a hometown affinity with its originators.

'Bringing the show to Waterford will test the strength of the work. If it goes down well there, it will say a lot for the piece,' said composer Cyril Murphy this week.

The show, which will also have a further two night run in Wexford Opera House in November, has had some reworking since May with a new scene written and one number cut.

The reaction to the new, tighter-scripted show will be closely examined by Colfer, Murphy and Bates who have high hopes that the show will transfer to Dublin in the new year.

'The critical reviews we received in May were more than we ever expected. People stopped us in the street to tell us how much they enjoyed it. We would hope it would get a good reaction in Waterford. If it does, we feel it has the legs to go on,' he said.
