Belfast regeneration plans announced

Friday November 28 2008

Two separate plans for the regeneration of different parts of Belfast have been announced within the past 24 hours.

East Belfast is to get a multi-million pound investment in a project to commemorate the Titanic while there's a plan to build large-scale projects in the west of the city.

The power-sharing executive has announced investment worth £43m in building an exhibition centred on the Titanic in east Belfast.

Belfast city council now says it expects to spend an extra ten million on the project while private funding for housing and a new village, Titanic Quarter, is anticipated in time for the anniversary of its sinking in 2012.

Meanwhile, the West Belfast and Shankill Enterprise Council, a think-tank of small and medium sized businesses, is proposing a major upgrade including a new urban village in Andersonstown, a Gaeltacht Quarter, and a project on the Black Mountain above the city.
